Russian national team became the winner of the European Athletics Indoor Championships

Winter European Athletics Indoor Championships in Prague, Czech Republic ended with a  convincing victory for the Russian national team. Our team took first place in the overall standings with 6 gold and 2 silver medals, leaving behind France (3-1-1), Great Britain (2-4-3)  and Czech Republic (2-1-3).

The highest awards went to Maria Kuchina (High Jump), Angelica Sidorova (Pole Vault), Yekaterina  Koneva (Triple Jump), Yelena Korobkina (3,000 m), Ilya Shkurenev (Heptathlon) and Daniil Tsyplakov (High Jump). Silver medals were received by Yekaterina  Poistogovoa   (800 m) and Alexander Gripich (Pole Vault).

It should be noted that Daniil Tsyplakov became a  European champion for the first time. Angelica Sidorova and Yekaterina  Koneva won the Prague Championships having set personal bests. Ilya Shkurenev gave a great performance. He won the first in the history of Russia gold in Heptathlon at the European Athletics Indoor Championships with a total of  6,353 points, which is the best result of this season.

Acting Head Coach of the Russian national Athletics  team Yuri Borzakovskiy stressed  that the team’s results set at the continental Championships exceeded his expectations.

“We were counting on 6 medals, of which 2 would be gold, and we won eight, having exceeded the target for gold by 3 times. All our leaders proved their high quality, and young athletes announced their medal ambitions”, – said Acting Head Coach of the Russian national Athletics  team.

The winter season in Athletics is over. But in just a few days the Russian team will begin its preparations for the main start of the season – the World Athletics Championships, to be held from 22 to 30 August in Beijing (China).
