Semen Yelistratov is a World Champion in Short Track Speed Skating
Russian athlete Semen Yelistratov won gold in the World Short Track Speed Skating Championships 2015 held in Moscow (1,500 m event). Another representative of Russia, Viktor An became fifth.
According to the head coach of the Russia’s national team Sebastien Cross, Yelistratov accomplished a tactically wise final race. This as well as good luck at the finish line allowed him to become a champion.
“I am very glad for Semen’s victory, he has made a long way to this success”, – said the French trainer.
After his victory Semen Yelistratov as well as the Russian fans, who filled Krylatskoe Sport Palace, were disappointed. Both Russian Relay teams, which were among the favorites for medals, couldn’t reach the final because of the disappointing falls.
President of the Russian Skating Union Alexei Kravtsov commented on the results of the second competition day:
“It was a ambiguous day. On the one hand today we have seen a great triumph of Smen Elistratov in the 1,500 m event, on the other hand our Relay teams had bad luck in the semi finals – both men’s and women’s teams had falls. Unfortunately tomorrow we will not be represented in two Relay finals. But nevertheless we’ll try to show our best in the final day of the competition”.
Three Relay medals, as well as medals in the 1000 m and 3000 m events will be contested on Sunday.
