Sergei Kovpanets: “Russian team will certainly have to get all 10 Olympic slots and perform at the Olympic Games in Rio in all kinds of programs”
Anastasia Voinova of Russia won the sprint race of the Track Cycling World Cup, held in Guadalajara (Mexico). In the final the Russian athlete defeated Guo Shuang from China and a representative of Cuba Guerra Rodriguez Lisandra.
“I can’t remember when I last rode so many races on the track in one day. I probably never did. But I am used to getting the job done. In addition to those beaten by me at the European Championships there were also racers from the other countries. Even without thinking, I can immediately name at least five titled athletes who have repeatedly won or became medalists in this discipline. And as for me I reached the podium in the World Cup sprint for the first time and I am the owner of the gold medal. Last year I was only ninth in all three stages of the World Cup. So this time my minimum objective was to achieve top eight finishes. But when I ride the sprint, I feel crazy drive. And, of course, you have to remain cool, feel no fear of your rivals and be confident. Because your condition can always be observed and what is even more important others can feel it. This is how you can confuse an opponent who is stronger than you. I must learn to do that and I must work on myrself. This is what I intend to do in the nearest future, before the Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, “- said Anastasia Voinova.
Sergei Kovpanets, Head coach of the national team commented on the successful performance of the Russian athlete.
“Anastasia has proven that after a successful performance at the European Championships, she remains in perfect physical shape, which allows her to win the highest awards at the World Cup. This victory was very valuable and important, since it was Anastasia Voinova’s first victory in sprint in the Olympic discipline.”
The winner of the gold medal is going to perform at the Olympic cycle track in London, where the second stage of the World Cup will be held in early December.
“I like to perform in the UK, thus I’m glad to go to this stage of the World Cup. There is a special attitude towards our sport in this country – said Voinova. – Before the 2012 Games I could visit the Olympic track at the World Cup. It seemed to me very challenging then, but after that the guys told me that at the time it was simply new and ‘cold’. At the Olympic Games the cyclists’ feelings were totally different “, – R-Sport news agency quoted the European champion.
Apart from winning gold in the individual pursuit, Anastasia together with Daria Shmeleva won a bronze medal in the team competition. Sergei Kovpanets thinks that consistent results of our team is a very important achievement.
“We are very glad that our girls consistently perform in the team sprint. Perhaps anxiety prevented Dasha Shmeleva from showing the seconds that we were expecting from her. However, in the final she improved and set a time good enough to climb the podium. The work that has been done is really important for us. Most important is the fact that our national team has its own track in Moscow, which, in fact, is the base that allows us to confidently proceed. This aspect has allowed to carry out excellent work in the past few years, which has turned into the result.”
The Head Coach of the Russian National Cycling Team also noted how important it was that “the Russian Olympic Committee was providing all means of support and assistance to the national team. Progress can be seen clearly. Cycling in Russia has entered the stage of rapid development. We will do our best to represent our national team to the fullest extent possible at the Olympic Games in Brazil. The only question is what athletes will compete for the podium. Russian team will certainly have to get all 10 Olympic slots and perform at the Olympic Games in Rio in all kinds of programs.”
