The head of the ROC praised the brilliant performance of Russian athletes during day 9 of the Olympic Games
Saturday, February 15 , was an eventful day. Victor Ahn brought Russia the country’s first Olympic gold medal in short track . He was the leader in 1,000 meters and Vladimir Grigoriev finished immediately after him – Russians swept two top stpots of the podium.
Alexander Zhukov praised these victories : “Our athletes’ performance in short track was outstanding. It’s a real breakthrough. This is not only due to the famous champion Victor Ahn, who has received his 4th gold medal, Grigoriev also performed brilliantly. This is such an emotional sport. All fans were thrilled”.
Another brilliant victory today belongs to the skeletonist Alexander Tretyakov who has taken skeleton gold with a total time of 3 minutes 44.29 seconds after four heats. Martins Dukurs of Latvia has take the silver and bronze was taken by America’s Matthew Antoine. Tretyakov’s gold is also the first Olympic gold for Russian athletes in skeleton.
“We were expecting him to win, he was aimed at this victory. We saw that in each run he showed better results. I think it’s a great victory the Russian skeleton and for us”, – said the head of the ROC.
In situation in ice hockey was worse: Russian women’s ice hockey team dropped from the medal race, losing 0:2 to Switzerland in the quarterfinal, and the Russian hockey players showed a great game, yet the U.S. team won 3:2 after bullit shootout.
“We hoped that our girls will compete for the medals. Nobody expected that after their victories over strong teams they will lose to Swiss. Well, what can you do? You can not always win, hurtful defeats happen sometimes. And the guys played well . It was an absolutely equal match with the Americans. A defeat in a shootout is not an indicator, in fact everything still lies ahead. Victories are yet to come”- promised Alexander Zhukov.
