Alexander Zhukov: “We have been waiting for this victory for 34 years”

“Yesterday in Austria a historic event for the Russian sport took place. For the first time our athlete – Alexander Khoroshilov –  won the stage of the Alpine Skiing World Cup!

I heartily congratulate Alexander, the coaching staff of the team, the management of the Russian Alpine Skiing and Snowboard Federation on this success. We have been waiting for it for so long. Thirty four years have passed since Alexander Zhirov won the Giant Slalom ahead of the legendary Swede Ingemar Stenmark.

After that victory the Russian Alpine Skiing sport enjoyed favorable results time after time. For example, I remember Svetlana Gladysheva’s silver medal at the 1994 Olympic Games. However, we couldn’t become one of the world leaders on a permanent basis.

And finally Alexander Khoroshilov’s first place. I sincerely wish him good luck at the coming World Cup and I hope that his high results will not only become regular but will also become a starting point for our team’s breakthrough to a new level”.
