Dmitriy Svishchev: “A proposal to hold the European Championships in our country was received from the World Curling Federation. Today it is one of the main topics for discussion”
Russia could become an organizer of the women’s European Curling Championships 2017. President of the Russian Curling Federation (RCF) Dmitry Svishchev said this to the President of the World Curling Federation (WCF) Kate Caithness at the end of a working meeting.
“A proposal to hold the European Championships in our country was received from the World Curling Federation. Today it is one of the main topics for discussion. It is likely that Russia will host this tournament, – said Svishchev. – We are currently discussing the places for the competition. It will either be Moscow or Sochi, or Kazan. We now have to negotiate with the Ministry of Sport and the heads of the regions”.
The President of the RCF has also commented on the performance of the Russian women’s team at the European Championships held on these days in Switzerland.
“Despite the humiliating defeat in the last End (and before that our team was undefeated), there is nothing to worry about. Our girls are in good shape. Today, they will fight against the Danes in the semifinals and if our girls win, then tomorrow they will meet with the team of Switzerland. WCF President Kate Caithness also noted the good performance of our teams at the current European Championships and congratulated them on the successful completion of the group stage. I join her congratulations and would like to add that at the moment we are holding a strong position in the European top list. This is good news! Our minimum target – to enter top four – has already been achieved. Our maximum target is to take the first place. We will fight, and the game will answer all the questions”.
In addition, the organizational issues of the World Championships 2015, to be held in April in Sochi were discussed at the working meeting in Switzerland. The capital of the XXII Olympic Winter Games will host the Mixed Doubles Championships (pairs, consisting of one man and one lady per pair), and the competition among the athletes who are not less than 50 years of age. In December, the official delegation of the WCF will make a working visit Russia.
“For our part we will fulfill all our obligations related to holding the World Championships. I am sure it will be held at the highest level”, – said the head of the RCF.
We remind that Russia has repeatedly hosted major curling championships. In 2010, a World Mixed Doubles Championships was held in Chelyabinsk and in 2011 the European Championships was held in Moscow.
