Russian Volleyball women’s team earned a berth to Rio!
Russian Women’s National Volleyball team performed brilliantly at the European Olympic qualifying tournament in Ankara (Turkey). Today, our girls won the final over the Netherlands team 3-1 (25-21, 22-25, 25-19, 25-20). Yuriy Marichev’s team won its fifth victory in a row (previously they defeated Poland, Italy, Belgium and Turkey) and earned a precious berth to the Rio de Janeiro Olympic Game.
Today’s match was similar to the 2015 European Championships final. As in October last year, the Russian national team proved its dominance over the progressing, but the still unstable team of Netherlands. Rivals can only console themselves with the fact that in contrast to our previous game with Kosheleva and Ko today they managed to win one set. To expect more, the Dutch team had to solve the problem of Tatiana Kosheleva (23 points) and Natalia Obmochaeva (24) and that is not easy. Leaders of the Russian national team scored a total of 47 points! Jana Shcherban added another 10 points.
It should be noted that the Russian volleyball team became the first team sport team, that secured a place at the 2016 Games! The berth for Russia was earned by setters Yekaterina Kosyanenko and Evgenia Startseva, opposites Natalya Malikh and Natalia Obmochaeva, blockers Irina Zaryazhko, Yekaterina Lyubushkina and Irina Fetisova outside hitters Ksenia Ilchenko, Tatiana Kosheleva, Lyubov Sokolova, Natalya Khodunova and Yana Shcherban and liberos Anna Malova and Yelena Yezhova.
