Russian rock climbers won 9 medals at the 3rd Winter Military World Games in Sochi
The Rock Climbing tournament of the 3rd Winter Military World Games finished on February 27, at the Bolshoy Ice Dome, in Sochi. On the last competition day, two sets of medals in Speed Climbing were contested. As a result, Russians added 7 awards to their team’s medal haul.
Sergey Luzhetsky of Sverdlovsk region, silver medalist of World Championships (2010, 2012, 2014), and Anna Tsyganova of Krasnoyarsk region, World Champion (2016) and European Champion (2013), became winners of the Classic Format competition (doubles race, unique routs).
Third places went to the bronze medalist of the Russian Bouldering Cup 2015 Vadim Timonov (St. Petersburg) and the winner of the European Students Games 2016 All-Around Evgeny Lapshin (Sverdlovsk region). Note that this is his second medal at these Games. The day before he won Gold in Bouldering.
The final event of the Rock Climbing tournament in Sochi was Speed Climbing, two climbers race on a standardised 15 meter routes. And here our compatriots were on top.
For the second time that day Anna Tsyganova and Sergey Luzhetsky were among top three. In the women’s final Anna outran the winner of the European Championship 2016 Aurelia Sarisson (France) by three seconds. And Sergey in a battle for third place outran Bronze prize winner of the 2014 World Cup Alessandro Santoni (Italy). Athletes were divided by 14 hundredths of a second only. Tree-time winner of the World Championships (2013, 2014, 2016) Darya Khan of Tyumen Region, Bashkortostan, won Bronze.
Thus, in four competition days Russian climbers won nine medals (two in Bouldering, seven in Speed), four of which were gold, one silver and four bronze.
The Russian national team won the unofficial overall team standings of the 3rd Winter Military World Games. Our athletes won 22 gold, 9 silver and 11 bronze medals. Second and third places were taken by the teams of Italy (8-6-6) and France (6-12-5).
A total of 44 sets of medals has been played in individual and team events. The sports program of the 2017 Games consisted of seven sports: Biathlon, Cross-country Skiing, Alpine Skiing, Ski-orienteering, Ski mountaineering, Sport Climbing and Short Track.
