Vladimir Putin: “Russia has always supported the International Olympic Movement and will support it in the future”

In the framework of the SportAccord General Assembly held in Sochi Russian President Vladimir Putin has announced the country’s readiness to hold all major international competitions at the highest level.

“There is much work to be done, – said the President. But, given our experience and our ability to deliver on our promises, there is no doubt that we would implement all these large-scale projects at the highest level”.

In addition, the President stressed that Russia pays great attention to the preparation of a number of major sporting events. He recalled that this summer Kazan will host FINA World Championships, a year later the IIHF World Hockey Championship will take place in Moscow and St. Petersburg, in 2017 and 2018 our country will hold two important competitions under the auspices of FIFA – FIFA Confederations Cup and the World Cup, and in 2019 Krasnoyarsk will host the 29th Winter Universiade.

Vladimir Putin also said that further development of mass sports is one of the urgent tasks. “It is important that as many people as possible in the world understand the importance of regular physical activity and physical exercise, that they take a new look at their lifestyle and give up bad habits”. He expressed the hope that the work of  international experts under the SportAccord Convention will contribute to this.

Russian President drew attention of the international sports community to the fact that ‘any confrontations or inability or lack of desire to hear one another really threatens the unity of the world sports movement. Today sporting community is paying particular attention to finding compromises, respecting the rights and interests of athletes, spectators and everyone who is not indifferent to sport’.

Vladimir Putin stressed that the support of the international sports community is very important for Russia, and our country looks forward to fruitful cooperation with the International Olympic Committee in the field of the Olympic Movement development.

“We are ready to expand cooperation in the interests of sport, peace and development. It is especially important under current conditions. It’s been long since sport has become a universal language. It has a special humanitarian mission. Sport is aimed at uniting people from all over the world instead of dividing them and at giving bright positive emotions to millions of people.

Russia has always consistently supported and intends to support the International Olympic movement, – the Russian leader said at a meeting with Thomas Bach, the head of the International Olympic Committee. – And in this sense, we look forward to a joint and fruitful work”.

Putin also said that he was very pleased to show the Head of the IOC how the Olympic legacy and the Olympic University in Sochi are developing, and to discuss possible joint IOC activities.

Thomas Bach, in turn, expressed his satisfaction that the Sochi Olympic Games sports facilities are actively used and host competitions with a large number of spectators on a regular basis. IOC president also urged heads of international sports federations to use Sochi as a platform for various world championships more often.

“It is great to see that the venues of the Sochi Olympic Games are actively used. And I want to ask the heads of all sports organizations to consider Sochi as a venue for all kinds of world championships. The city has a perfect legacy and a great experience of organizing major international competitions”, – said Thomas Bach.
