The head of the ROC: If we accomplish everything planned by 2018, it will be a breakthrough in the economic development
Sochi showed itself in the best light, when hosting the XXII Olympic Winter Games. One of the next major starts to take place in the city is the World Cup. Our country will host it for the first time in history in 2018. The President of the Russian Olympic Committee (ROC) Alexander Zhukov warned that we will have even more work to do than during the preparations for the Games.
“This event is bigger in terms of infrastructure – said the ROC President Alexander Zhukov. – The World Cup is more complicated in terms of organization, because it involves 11 cities and 12 stadiums. It is necessary to build relevant airports, hotels, roads, etc. Of course, this project is more ambitious. Especially, if the transport connection between the cities will be implemented”.
The 21st FIFA World Cup will take place between June 8 and July 8, 2018. Russia will be hosting this champioship for the first time ever. The FIFA Executive Committee was choosing among the bids of Russia, England, as well as joint projects of Spain/Portugal and Belgium/Netherlands.
The list of cities to host the championship includes Moscow, Kaliningrad, St. Petersburg , Volgograd, Kazan, Nizhny Novgorod, Samara, Saransk, Rostov-on-Don, Yekaterinburg and Sochi.
“There is an idea, a good idea, in my opinion, although an expensive one – to create high-speed trains to connect the cities, at least Moscow, St. Petersburg, Nizhny Novgorod, Kazan and the south of the country. If this could be done by 2018, it would be a breakthrough in the economic development of the country, another transport accessibility. If a person can get to Nizhny Novgorod by train in 2 hours – it’s a completely different communication. We know what it is by experience of Europe, China and Japan. Therefore, if we consider the championship as a mega project, of course, the year 2018 is a more ambitious idea than the Olympic Games, since it involves not just one city, but almost the whole European territory of the country and even Yekaterinburg”, – said Alexander Zhukov.
