On Thursday, April 24, at the Russian Olympic Committee (ROC), the meeting of the Executive Committee was held. At this meeting the date of the Olympic Meeting was determined – May 29. At the Olympic Meeting the new edition of the ROC Charter and the report covering the period 2010-2014 will be discussed, and the elections of the ROC governing and control bodies will be held.
Executive Committee members approved standards for the number of representatives from the ROC members to attend the Olympic Meeting – three representatives from each Russian Olympic sports federation and one representative from each of the rest of federations.
Executive Committee members also discussed the changes of the ROC Charter, caused by the necessity to bring the Charter into line with the applicable legislation of the Russian Federation. Executive Committee members unanimously approved the changes and now the new edition of the Charter should be adopted at the Olympic Meeting. Key innovations are associated with the introduction of the recognition institution. Also, more democratic procedures for establishing the Executive Committee are offered, according to which all its members will be elected by the Olympic Meeting. Vice-Presidents of the Olympic Committee will also be elected by the Olympic Meeting, as well as the Executive Director (CEO) and Secretary General.
The activities of the Olympic Committee aimed at promoting the Russian representatives to the international sports associations were considered at the Executive Committee meeting. Work in this direction is quite successful. The number of positions, held by the Russian representatives in the ISO has increased by 32 over the last year. Our representatives are holding important positions in the IOC Commissions as well. Olympic Committee President Alexander Zhukov was appointed Chairman of the Evaluation Commission to select 2022 Olympic Winter Games capital. He is also a member of the Sport for All Commission. Shamil Tarpishchev has joined the Entourage Commission and will continue to work in the Sport and Environment Commission. Vitaly Smirnov is a member of the Committee on Foreign Relations. Alexander Popov still heads the IOC Coordination Commission for the Second Summer Youth Olympic Games in Nanjing. He is also a member of four other Commissions.
Executive Committee members confirmed that one of the main objectives of the ROC was to strengthen the position of Russia in the international sports arena, and that it was necessary to support All-Russian sports federations in promoting their representatives to various bodies of International and European sports federations. It was also decided that financial support should be provided in the form of donations of funds to pay membership fees for 2014 to the ISO and to meet the expenses associated with participation of their representatives in the work of ISO in 2014.
“We have considered the amendments to the Charter of the ROC, because we need to bring the Charter into line with the changes that have occurred in the Charter of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and the Russian legislation. At the Olympic meeting on May 29 we will consider changes to the Charter of the ROC. ROC President, Vice President, General Director, General Secretary and Executive Committee members – the whole top management team – will be elected at this meeting as well. The elections are held every four years in accordance with regulations”, – said Zhukov.
