  • The International Olympic Committee Executive Board endorsed the schedule of the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo. The programme includes  33 sports and 339 events.

Preliminary matches will kick off in Football and Softball on July 22. Rowing and Archery events will be held on the day of the Opening Ceremony, July 23. The sports programme of the 2020 Games will end on August 9.

The 2020 Games will use a total of 42 venues, including 24 existing, 10 temporaries and eight new permanent venues. These will include three venues in Fukushima, Ibaraki, and Miyagi prefectures, which were among those most affected by the 2011 tsunami and resulting nuclear disaster.

The schedule was determined using an integrated approach, taking into account the technical rules and regulations of the various international federations, gender balance, the popularity of certain sports in Japan, the status of athletes and the television audience.

“I believe the Tokyo 2020 Games will generate more enthusiasm than ever. Starting with a softball match in Fukushima two days before the opening of the Games, until the men’s marathon on the final day, a record 33 sports and 339 events will be packed into the two weeks of the Games,” said Tokyo 2020 president Yoshiro Mori.

However, Swimming, Diving and Synchronized Swimming schedules are still to be determined. Baseball and Softball matches schedule can still be corrected. While the dates of the Football matches are to be approved by the FIFA in October, this year.

It bears reminding, that five sports are making their debut at the Olympic Games 2020: Baseball/Softball, Karate, Surfing, Climbing and Skateboarding.
