Viktor Ahn: “My plan for the final worked”
Six-time Olympic champion Viktor Ahn won the first gold for the Russian team at the European Short Track Speed Skating Championships Dordrecht, Holland.
He was the first in the shortest distance – 500 meters with a time of 41.780 seconds.
Sjinkie Knegt from Netherlands became second (41.834), and third place went to another Russian athlete Semyon Yelistratov (41.935). It was the second time that he’d climbed the podium of this tournament. Earlier Yelistratov won silver in the 1,500m. Ahn took fourth place in this event.
“On Saturday there were two finals. I failed to show what I wanted in the 1,500m. As a result I was only fourth. But I’m happy for Semyon Elistratov, who became second – said Viktor Ahn in an interview with the ROC Information Service.
– Two Dutchmen, I we Semyon took part in the 500m final. It was a very strong race. It was essential for Knegt to become first in it. But, fortunately, my plan for this final worked. Strategically, I was able to beat him. It should be noted that the leader of the Dutch is in great shape now. On Sunday we will run 1,000m and 3,000m races, and the last race will be the final relay. Sunday is going to be a difficult day.”
