The Russian team, which took part in the XV Summer European Youth Olympic Festival in Baku, has returned home. The heroes of EYOF-2019, along with their medals, landed on a comfortable Aeroflot liner in terminal D of Sheremetyevo airport where the traditional solemn ceremony of welcoming the young athletes took place.

The President of the Russian Olympic Committee Stanislav Pozdnyakov noted that, although, the representatives of different teams and sports flew to the capital of Azerbaijan at different times, they returned as one large, friendly Olympic family.

    – Meeting you in Sheremetyevo, I can understand that during festival in Baku you became a real family. The festival was a success. I am sure there was excess luggage during the flight due to the large number of medals, however, this will be paid for by the Russian Olympic Committee (smiles). For many of you, these are the first Olympic awards and I hope they will become a starting point for you. Believe me, the Olympic Games are within your reach. Time flies very fast and before you know it, you will be representing Team Russia at the Olympic Games!

I went to my first Games at the age of 19. If I had been told two years before that I would return from Barcelona with a gold medal, I would not have believed it. Time flies swiftly in the sports world and I want you to spend it productively. Your dedication and hard work will pay off a hundredfold. You will become the pride of your relatives, coaches and our immense country. Congratulations on this success and I wish many new victories for you. I am sure that one day we will all go to the Olympic Games together, – said the head of the ROC.

Five-time champion of the Games, Alexandra Sabitova, spoke on behalf of the young athletes. The swimmer thanked the ROC for creating ideal conditions for the successful performance in Baku.

    – I am very glad to be back home with my victories. Thank you to the coaches, masseurs, doctors, the ROC, and to everyone who supported us during the week, – said Alexandra while addressing the guests of the ceremony, who were admiring the five gold medals and one silver medal shimmering on her chest with curiosity.

According to the established tradition, athletes and fans together sang the anthem of the Russian Federation, and also took part in a general photo shoot.

For Team Russia, the festival in Baku was the most successful in terms of the number of medals won. In total, our athletes won 66 medals – they won 28 gold, 17 silver and 21 bronze medals. Of the 108 athletes competing on the shores of the Caspian Sea, 79 athletes from 36 regions of Russia became the medallists and winners of the XV European Youth Olympic Festival.

During EYOF-2019 in Baku the young athletes were supported and praised for their victories by: the General sponsor of the ROC – global energy company Gazprom, the General partners of the ROC – the largest airline of Russia Aeroflot, the official outfitter of the Russian Olympic team ZASPORT, and the Partner of the ROC – mining and metallurgical company Norilsk Nickel.
