Today, on October 4, the President of the ROC held a working meeting with the Vice President of the National Olympic Committee of Spain and Head of the Spanish Handball Federation Francisco Blazquez. The President of the Russian Handball Federation Sergey Shishkarev also took part in the meeting. Both sides discussed cooperation in various areas, including Russia’s bid to host the European Women’s Handball Championship in 2024.
– Today’s meeting was a continuation of the work that began in November last year, when a Memorandum of Cooperation was signed between the Russian Olympic Committee and the National Olympic Committee of Spain in Marbella, – said Stanislav Pozdnyakov. – This document will undoubtedly contribute to the strengthening of sports relations and mutual understanding between our countries. As for handball, everyone still has fresh memories of the brilliant victory of our women’s team at the 2016 Olympics.
The President of the ROC also announced that during the meeting of the Interdepartmental Commission of the Government of the Russian Federation, a bid to host the European Women’s Handball Championship in 2024 was presented.
– We hope that the European Handball Federation will support the project, which was presented today by the President of the Russian Handball Federation Sergey Shishkarev. Russia always responsibly organizes major international sports competitions. If our bid is successful, matches will be held in four cities – Moscow, St. Petersburg, Krasnodar and Rostov-on-Don, – added Stanislav Pozdnyakov.
Francisco Blasquez thanked the President of the ROC for the invitation to Moscow, noting the importance of such meetings which strengthen sports ties between National Olympic Committees.
– I would like to convey to you the words of my colleague, Mr. Alejandro Blanco, President of the Spanish Olympic Committee. The ROC can always count on our support in implementing sports projects and initiatives. I am sure that our cooperation will become more productive and mutually beneficial with each passing year.
Afterwards, the Vice President of the Spanish Olympic Committee invited Stanislav Pozdnyakov to the International Handball Tournament, which will be held in Spain in January 2020.
Furthermore, Francisco Blazquez and the Head of the Russian Handball Federation Sergey Shishkarev signed a cooperation agreement providing for the exchange of coaching staff, the organization of international meetings and participation in training programmes.
