The elections were held as part of the 6th General Assembly of the European Olympic Committees (EOC) in Dubrovnik, Croatia. The Russian candidate received the support of a majority of representatives of the continent’s National Olympic Committees, as well as members of the newly elected EOC Athletes’ Commission.
Alongside Gureiro, the EOC Athletes’ Commission includes French taekwondo athlete Gwladys Épangue, Croatian track and field athlete Blanka Vlašić, British triathlete Alistair Brownlee, Slovak archer Alexandra Longová, Estonian track and field athlete Gerd Kanter, Hungarian short track speed skater Viktor Knoch, and Greek sailor Pavlos Kagialis.
Gerd Kanter was re-elected Chair of the EOC Athletes’ Commission, while Alexandra Longová will serve as Secretary.
Jonathan Gureiro said:
“First of all, I would like to thank my colleagues from the Athletes’ Commission of the Russian Olympic Committee, who nominated me for this responsible position, as well as the leadership of the Russian Olympic Committee for approving my candidacy. I will do everything possible to live up to the high trust placed in me and to represent the interests of our athletes with dignity in one of the leading bodies of the international Olympic movement.
I am pleased that the overwhelming majority of Assembly participants voted for a representative of Russia. This is a positive sign. Today, our country is represented both on the IOC Athletes’ Commission by Yelena Isinbayeva and on the EOC Athletes’ Commission.”
