– There is no family in our country that was not affected by the Great Patriotic War, everyone contributed to the common Victory, often at the cost of their lives. But even in the harshest years, sport remained a symbol of the courage of our people. Football matches in besieged cities, All–Union tournaments, sports broadcasting - all this raised the spirit of the people.
Athletes were at the forefront of those who stood up for the country. During the most difficult period of the Great Patriotic War, the infizkult defended the approaches to the capital, and students and teachers of the Leningrad University of Physical Education named after Lesgaft went to the front almost in full force. For this feat, the university received the Order of the Red Banner. The athletes formed the famous Separate Motorized Rifle Brigade of the Special Purpose of the NKVD of the USSR, which carried out daring operations behind enemy lines, they also made the legendary ascent of Elbrus, during which climbers tore down Nazi flags from the highest peak of Europe. All this strengthened the confidence in Victory.
Many decades later, we remember these and other feats, are proud of the names of the winners and thank our ancestors. On behalf of the entire sports community, I wish all veterans, children of the war, all who have experienced the hardships of this terrible time, all who honor their feat, long life, faith, hope and love.
