The II CIS Games concluded in Minsk on August 13, with the Russian national team securing the top spot in the overall medal standings.
Russian athletes claimed an impressive total of 288 medals, consisting of 149 gold, 89 silver, and 50 bronze. Belarus secured the second position with 236 medals (48 gold, 78 silver, and 110 bronze), while Uzbekistan took third place with 106 medals (28 gold, 25 silver, and 53 bronze).
– We are proud of our athletes, in whose honor the National Anthem of the Russian Federation was played 149 times at the Games,” commented ROC President Stanislav Pozdnyakov. – It was especially gratifying to see with our own eyes the sincere desire of representatives of all participating countries not just to win, but to achieve maximum results, while maintaining mutual respect in the arenas, friendship and support outside the stadiums. This is the kind of atmosphere that fans all over the world fall in love with sports for! I am not afraid to say that the II CIS Games have become the embodiment of true Olympic values and set a high bar for other sports competitions!
Regina Shaidullina of Russia secured the Games’ inaugural championship on August 5 by clinching victory in the women’s 45 kg weightlifting competition. Right from the outset of the competition, Russian athletes established their dominance and progressively extended their lead in the overall standings.
The Games provided fans with the chance to witness the performances of world-class athletes once more, among other exciting experiences. In the realm of rhythmic gymnastics, Arina Averina and Lala Kramarenko reaffirmed their exceptional skill by clinching a gold medal and two silver medals. Equally noteworthy were the performances of the junior athletes, many of whom contributed to our team’s well-deserved accolades.
Belarus once again demonstrated its proficiency in hosting multi-sport international competitions at a high level. I extend my congratulations to my colleagues from the Government of the Republic and the National Olympic Committee for the success of this magnificent sporting event. The next Games will be held in Baku in 2025. The CIS flag was solemnly handed over to the Azerbaijani Organizing Committee at the closing ceremony of the competition at the Minsk Arena.
